How many days do you need in Hawaii?
Once you’ve landed in Hawaii, you’ll have little control over the weather or any unexpected challenges that can occur. However, knowing where you want to go, what you want to see, and how you’re going to get there are the key steps you can plan to maximize the most of your time on the Hawaii islands.
Getting to Hawaii can be costly, but traveling between islands is less expensive than most people think. In Hawaii, inter-island flights through Hawaiian Airlines take only 45 minutes or less, allowing you to even visit every island in a single day if you wanted!
The Hawaiian Islands are a paradise that offers something for every type of traveler. They have managed to preserve a chunk of their pristine beauty despite heavy tourism that was inevitable.
Most tourists plan to stay for 7 to 10 days during their vacation to Hawaii. During your one-week stay in Hawaii, you can only scratch the surface and explore some of the top attractions on the islands, but I’m here to make sure you see the best of what they have to offer!
This Hawaii travel guide will provide insight into planning an itinerary with multiple Hawaii islands. Only the most dedicated tourists will try to hit every stop on my Hawaii 7-day itinerary, but you can start checking each island off one by one on future trips, spending a full week in each place to see as much as possible. I recommend sticking to one island for 7 days in Hawaii. That gives you enough time to recover from jet lag, explore the Hawaiian islands, do a lot of sightseeing, and have some downtime to unwind and soak in the aloha.

Maui: “The Los Angeles of Hawaii”
Maui, “The Valley Isle,” is the second-largest Hawaiian island and perhaps the most popular. This island is well-known for its beautiful beaches, the holy ʻĪao Valley, views of humpback whales migrating across its waters during the winter, exquisite farm-to-table dining, and the breathtaking dawn and sunset views from Haleakalā.
In Maui, you will find a blend of luxury vacationers, self-driven travelers, and beach bums.
Oʻahu: “The Miami of Hawaii”
Oahu is sometimes referred to as “The Gathering Place,” and it certainly lives true to its name! It is the most “touristy” island in the Hawaiian archipelago, and the third-largest Hawaiian island offers amazing white sand beaches with the best nightlife.
Oahu is especially known for its eclectic resorts and tourism destinations, which attract tourists more interested in a fun, planned vacation than exploration.

Kauai is a small island, just 40 by 50 km (nearly round), situated northwest of the Hawaiian archipelago. Kauai, also known as Garden Island, is the most picturesque and lush island in Hawaii. Molokaʻi: “The Friendly Island”
Located west of Maui, Molokai is home to incredible landscapes, from towering mountains to exquisite beaches. This is a tranquil and wild island surrounded in the south by an excellent coral reef, in the north by a snorkeling paradise, and in the south by enormous, magnificent cliffs.
Lānaʻi: “The Pineapple Island”
Lanai is a contradictory island that combines secluded luxury with an untamed landscape. Lanai may look like two unique destinations, even though it is only nine kilometers from Maui. You can find its luxury in opulent resorts where you can enjoy world-class amenities and championship golf. You can find its rugged adventures by driving a 4-wheel-drive car over the island’s rough back roads in search of off-beaten-path treasures.

Getting to Maui island in the center of the Pacific can be a long journey, no matter where you start. Kahului Airport (OGG) is the major airport, only a 15-minute drive from Kihei and a 36-minute drive from Lahaina. You can spend your first-day gathering food and supplies, settling into your condo, and breathing in Maui’s relaxing and fragrant atmosphere. Allow yourself a few moments on the first day to get into your new aloha mindset.
Day 2: Snorkeling in Olowalu and Lahaina
Olowalu Beach, about a half-hour drive from Kahului and Kihei, offers one of the most incredible coral gardens you’ll ever see. However, you will require snorkeling gear. With your gear, you’ll be able to go snorkeling whenever you want without worrying about picking up and dropping off rental gear.
Take a trip up the coast to captivating Lahaina after being a beach bum for the day, and you’ve finished snorkeling. Lahaina is an incredible place to enjoy shopping, visit art galleries, or hit a happy hour!
Day 3: West Maui
Day 2 covered plenty of West Maui. However, there are still some lovely hikes to do and a stunning beach beyond the area where most people don’t go.
My Hawaii itinerary of 7 days suggests you spend Day 3 traveling north on Highway 340, passing through the West Maui Natural Reserve Area. There are various art galleries, short hikes, cafes, and other attractions along the gorgeous drive. You should take your time and make a day out of it. Olivine Pools Trail, Waihee Ridge Trail, and Ohai Trail are a few hikes to consider while traveling in this area.
Day 4: Drive the Road to Hana
Driving the Road to Hana is the one activity you absolutely must do on your Hawaii itinerary!
Enjoy the Hana Highway as it winds along the coast to the sleepy village of Hana in the bay that is home to numerous waterfalls, unusual beaches, and other natural wonders.
It takes 5 hours and 128 miles to drive from Kihei to Hana and return via the scenic loop through Kaupo. Make sure to head out early!

Day 5: Haleakala National Park
Volcanic eruptions forged the Hawaiian islands, and you can see the results of this activity all across Maui. Haleakala National Park is the most attractive site to experience this volcanic landscape. You should include a tour of Upcountry Maui and Haleakala, including the summit area of Haleakala National Park, in Day 5’s itinerary for Maui. I highly suggest getting an early start and visiting Haleakala for sunrise – it is an incredible experience!
Day 6: Beach hopping and whale watching
Maui island is home to some of the best beaches, including Ka’anapali beach, Makena beach, Secret Cove beach, and Kihei beach. If you want to soak in the aloha vibes, find your preferred beach, get a drink menu, and spend the day taking in each calming breath with full mindfulness!
It cannot get much more romantic than a sunset sail on the water, which is why Maui is regarded as one of the most romantic vacation spots in the United States! Make sure to include at least one sunset sail on your trip to Maui, especially if it’s whale season!
Day 7: Depart from Maui
We suggest you do your packing on this last day of my Hawaii 7-day itinerary, so you can take it easy and enjoy the island for as long as possible. Take one final morning stroll along the beach, work on your tan beside the pool, and dine at a beachfront restaurant.
If your flight is delayed, you’ll have more time to explore or return to some of your favorite locations. For another great choice, visit the Queen Kaahumanu Shopping Mall, only 3 miles from the airport. The mall provides free luggage storage, Wi-Fi, and real-time flight departure monitors.

Enjoy a 45-minute drive through Honolulu on your route to Waikiki after landing at the airport. The beautiful coastline, home to the well-known Waikiki Beach, has long been a well-liked travel destination.
Beautiful waterfront restaurants and white sand beaches ring Waikiki. Waikiki Beach is a great place to while away the day watching the surfers come and go while soaking in the magnificent sunset.
Day 2: Honolulu and the South Shore
On day 2, you’ll likely wake up early because you’ll still be getting used to the local time. Grab a coffee and enjoy a stroll along the water on the road from Kaimana Beach to the Duke Kahanamoku statue on Waikkk’s beach, which is lovely and serene in the morning.
Outdoor adventures are as popular as beach tanning in South Oahu, home to Diamond Head Crater, Hanauma Bay, golf courses, and stunning beaches. Moreover, you can do it all while being in Honolulu and Waikiki!
Day 3: Southeast Coast Day Trip
Oahu’s East Coast, also known as the Windward Coast, is very different from the South Shore. A significant difference in the landscape will be apparent as you go along the coast. Along the windward shore, vibrant greenery and a luxuriant tropical rainforest predominate. You can visit Hawaii’s best beaches, including Lanikai Beach, Kailua Beach, and Halona Beach Cove.
Day 4: West Side Day Trip
Oahu’s west coast, also known as the Leeward Coast, offers a startling contrast to the Waikiki region. Here you’ll find breathtaking beaches with fewer people present and the Waianae Mountains serving as the backdrop. In addition, it serves as one of the trailheads for Ka’ena Point, a preserved seabird sanctuary with oceanfront walking pathways.
Day 5: Road Trip to North Shore
As you go up to the North Shore with this 7-day Oahu itinerary, you’ll have time to visit the northern portion of the East Coast. While driving, you’ll come across beautiful sights and vast Jurassic Park-like landscapes at Kualoa ranch. Take the H3 highway eastward from Waikiki to start your day at Ho’omaluhia Botanical Gardens. This route offers breathtaking views of the Koolau Range as it cuts through the gorgeous, verdant mountain landscape, making it possibly the most picturesque on the entire island of O’ahu.
Day 6: North Shore beaches, Waimea Valley, Food Trucks, Surfing
Without visiting the North Shore, no trip to Oahu would be complete! The North Shore is a must-see whether you follow my Hawaii 7-day itinerary for Oahu and stay a few nights here, or just take a day excursion.
It is a well-known surfer’s paradise known for its relaxed atmosphere, enormous waves, and amazing beaches. The cultural center of the area and the best place to stay for a few nights is the old surf town of Haleiwa! Here, you’ll find art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants housed in plantation-era buildings. You can enjoy one of the many food trucks on the North Shore.
Make sure to also pay a visit to the Polynesian Cultural Center while you are on the North side of Oahu – this is a must do for any trip to Oahu!

Day 7: Central Ohau and Depart
When leaving the North Shore, it’s a good opportunity to stop at Central O’ahu, a region of the island that is frequently overlooked. There are historical sites (like Battleship Missouri, Pacific Aviation Museum, etc.), coffee plantations, and regional rum producers to explore. Make the most of your last few brief moments on Oahu by gathering last-minute Hawaii souvenirs, enjoying one last poke bowl or ice, going on one last hike, or simply unwinding on the beach with toes in the sand.

Day 1: Arrive at Poipu
The Lihue airport, located in Kauai’s southeast, is where most visitors arrive. But if you’re island-hopping, Princeville may be your first stop. You’ll pass through farms, ranches, jungles, and forests as you pick up your rental car and drive to Poipu. You’ll also pass through a eucalyptus tree tunnel that acts as the entrance to the south coast.
Kauai sees stronger currents, more rain, and the occasional “good” ocean conditions due to its location in the north of the chain. Poipu is among the best snorkeling locations on Kauai.
Day 2: Explore Poipu and South Shore
On Day 2, you’ll likely get up early, but don’t fight it! After a long travel day before, early morning coastal walks are ideal, and Poipu is home to them. The Mahaulepu Heritage Trail meanders along the coastline for a few miles with pleasant ocean views and a range of historical and cultural attractions. There are some excellent beaches nearby as well. Poipu Beach, Brennecke’s, Shipwreck, Baby Beach, Kiahuna, and Mahaulepu are accessible and enjoyable in the morning. In addition to national botanical gardens and a few golf courses, Poipu is close to the Spouting Horn Blowhole.
Day 3: Waimea Canyon & Koke’s State Park
The Waimea Canyon, or “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific”, is your next destination on this 7-day itinerary. From Poipu, it takes roughly an hour to get there. Waimea Canyon State Park welcomes visitors and provides many lookouts and hiking routes for them to use while they explore the area. Moreover, Koke’s State Park has various paths to explore and is close to the canyon.
Day 4: Na Pali Coast
The Napali Coast is the jewel of Kauai’s north shore and features one of Hawaii’s most impressive examples of volcano erosion. The region can be explored in many ways, such as on foot, by boat, or by helicopter.
Have you ever taken a helicopter tour? View the Na Pali coast from the air to properly appreciate the beauty of Kauai. The peaks of the Napali Coast are jagged, have deep grooves, and have numerous waterfalls because they have been shaped by millions of years of rain.
Day 5: Wailua Region
It’s time to travel north after spending half of your Kauai getaway on the south coast.
You should stay the night in Wailua. However, I advise viewing as much as you can on your journey before concluding the day at your brand-new residence on the North Shore. The region around Wailua is well-known for its thick tropical jungle and impassable beaches. Renting a kayak and exploring the stunning Wailua River is one of the most well-liked activities in Wailua.
Day 6: Princeville, Hanalei & North Shore
The next destination on my Hawaii 7-day itinerary for Kauai is its North shore. Get an early start and explore the incredible beaches of the north shore on your final full day. You may enjoy the overlooks from the side of the road, providing views of Hanalei Bay and the valley.
Hanalei also frequently provides boat tours, kayaks, stand-up paddleboard rentals, and surf instruction. On the Hanalei River, one can have a different kayaking experience.
You have a few other amazing beaches in addition to Hanalei. Visit the Limahuli Garden & Preserve for a blend of native flora and culture.
Day 7: Depart
Since your time depends solely on when you depart, I didn’t want to give any particular suggestions for Day 7 of your one-week itinerary in Kauai. Fortunately, Princeville is only about 45 minutes from Lihue Airport. Therefore you have enough time for one last dawn and possibly even a snorkel. Use this final day to explore the Pacific Ocean once more and take in the marine life from Tunnels Beach if you didn’t have time the previous day.

Pick up your rental vehicle at one of the car rental counters at Kona Airport to begin your journey. Kona is the Big Island’s hub of sunshine and outdoor recreation. On Day 1, travel from Kona to the Kohala region by car, enjoying the scenery as you go. You’ll find a modicum of luxury in the Waikoloa region of Kohala, along with some of the Big Island’s most stunning beaches and coral gardens. The region’s top attractions include Mauna Kea Beach, Mau’umae Beach, Hapuna Beach Park, and Waikoloa.
Day 2: Kailua-Kona Region
It’s time for a little adventure as you’ve had a day to explore the beaches and soak up some of that aloha spirit. My Hawaii 7-day itinerary suggests you start Day 2 of your Big Island itinerary with a morning snorkel visit to Captain Cook Monument, the best snorkeling location on the island, and continuing your day in and around the vibrant town of Kailua-Kona. You will also have plenty of time to experience Keiki Beach and Magic Sands Beach. Locally known as Punalu’u, this is possibly the greatest location on the island to watch the local Hawaiian sea turtles.
Day 3: Ka’u Region
Day 3 turns a bit more adventurous now that you’ve had a couple of days to explore much of the Kona coast and get used to island time! Kua Bay, located just 30 minutes from Kona, receives top reviews from its visitors. Enjoy your day at Volcanoes National Park while witnessing magma bubble and shatter inside a sizable volcano crater. Black Sand Beach, Volcanoes National Park, Green Sand Beach, Rainbow Falls, and Waipio Valley all stop on several full-day tours.

Day 4: Explore Lava tubes and steam vents
You can spend an incredible day driving the Crater Rim Trail through the park’s heart if you begin at the Kilauea Visitor Center. You’ll discover sulfur banks, lava tunnels, steam vents, and countless other breathtaking viewpoints that you’ve never seen before.

Day 5: South Kona Region
Depending on your preferences, you should begin Day 5 either at Two Step for some early-morning snorkeling or at Ho’okena Beach for a relaxing morning. One of South Kona’s best beaches is Ho’okena Beach. Ho’okena Beach Park offers complete amenities, including covered picnic tables if you want shade. Night snorkeling with manta rays is the coolest activity you can do when visiting the Big Island of Hawaii.
Day 6: North Kona Region
Visit the lone uncharted area of Kona to the north on Day 6 of your Big Island tour.
Most of my favorite Big Island beaches are in this area, including Makalawena beach, Kua Bay beach park, and Kukio beach. Unfortunately, getting to most of them might be challenging, but each one is well worth the trouble.
Enjoy a luau at sunset to round off your trip in grand style. Learn more about the locals’ history and culture while enjoying traditional Hawaiian cuisine as the sun sets. It is a final memory you will treasure always.
Day 7: Explore Mauna Kea and Depart from Kona
Drive back toward Kona on the last day of your Hawaii 7-day itinerary on the Big Island by way of the stunning Mauna Kea mountain range. This breathtaking drive is a unique adventure!

The island of Molokai is a great option for individuals seeking adventure or a place to get away from it all. It would be best to travel into Honolulu and then take a commuter jet to get to Molokai because there are no direct flights from the mainland to that island.

Day 2: Kalaupapa Peninsula and Leper Colony
On the second day of your seven-day schedule in Molokai, explore the isolated Kalaupapa Peninsula and its history, where a former leper colony once resided. Prepare your hiking boots and get ready for some interesting history! A must-do activity in Molokai is touring this area because of the island’s breathtaking natural beauty and the sense of visiting a forbidden place full of history.
Day 3: Wild West Coast Beaches
Your third day on Molokai will be another leisurely day in your 7-day itinerary. You’ll find the best beaches on Molokai’s seemingly barren west shore, including Kawakiu Beach, Kepuhi Beach, and Papohaku Beach. Kawakiu Beach is a collection of rocky bays encircled by limestone cliffs eroding and exposing their delicate internal layers to the weather. The major beach is in the southern cove, where you may find cover, calm water, and an incredible natural wading pool.
Day 4: Molokai Forest Reserve & Kamakou Preserve
On Day 4, take a picturesque drive and stroll through the tropical, highland interior of Molokai. As you drive further and gain more elevation, the bumps lessen as you approach the Molokai Forest Reserve, and the temperature begins to drop. You will now reach the Kamakou Preserve, home to more than 200 native plants, distinctive ecosystems, and songbirds, as you continue from the Waikolu Lookout. Visit the uninhabited Mo’omomi Beach on the island’s north shore to continue your off-the-grid day.
Day 5: Halawa Valley & Beach
My Molokai Hawaii’s 7-day itinerary proposes that you spend Day 5 sunbathing on its twin beaches after exploring the lovely Halawa Valley. The Pacific Ocean reappears as you descend to the valley, meeting the blue sea with the green of the deep and lush mountains. After a few more slow-moving seconds, the Halawa Valley proper can be seen, crowned by the distant Moa’ula and Hipuapua Falls and topped off by the valley’s twin symmetric beaches. It’s quite the sight to behold!
Day 6: Explore the West End
Spend a day touring the rest of the island since you’ve already seen the East End. Driving to Pala’au State Park is a good place to start your tour of Molokai’s central region. Next, make stops at the Molokai Museum and Cultural Center and Coffees of Hawaii Plantation Store and Espresso Bar. Next, proceed to the three-mile-long Papohaku Beach, which has white sand. Drive up to the fresh air of Maunaloa town after spending about an hour at the beach to visit the Big Wind Kite Factory & Plantation Gallery, considered the best store on the island.
Day 7: Explore Moomomi Dunes and Depart
Before your trip home, visit the Moomomi Dunes, which is close to Hoolehua Airport. For archaeologists, this natural, sand-covered seashore is a real treasure trove. Ancient Hawaiian graves, Hawaiian artifacts, fossils, and even the bones of extinct birds are buried in the mounds. The ideal location to say “aloha” to Molokai is Kawaaloa Bay, which is a 20-minute leisurely walk to the west.

Take the ferry from Maui to start your seven-day adventure to Lanai. Although Lanai has a small airport, using the ferry is the most affordable and convenient method to get there. After settling into your accommodation, go to Hulopoe Bay’s marine preserve for the island’s greatest beach. You can spend the rest of the day at Hulopoe Beach, a stunning sandy beach with swimming and snorkeling opportunities and conveniences like picnic tables, restrooms, and showers.
Day 2: Explore the island in a four-wheel drive vehicle
Hire a four-wheel-drive vehicle for two or three days. Head to the Kanepuu Preserve outside Lanai City with a delicious picnic lunch you purchased at Pele’s Other Garden. The next destinations for today are the Garden of the Gods, Polihua Beach, and Lanai’s largest white sand beach. After lunch, turn around and proceed back the opposite way to Shipwreck Beach and Keomoku Village.
Day 3: Hiking the Puu Pehe Trail to see Sharks Bay and Sweetheart Rock
Today, hike the Puu Pehe Trail, which follows the coastline the entire way, to reach Lanai’s Sweetheart Rock, also known as Puupehe or Puu Pehe. From Sweetheart Rock, you can see Sharks Bay.
This is also easy to include in a day trip to Lanai if you’re taking the Lanai ferry from Maui. Best of all, the entire journey today will have plenty of ocean views!
Day 4: Visit Lanai City
On Day 4 of your Lanai 7-day itinerary, visit the charming Lanai Culture & Heritage Center for a lively history lesson before exploring the shops. Explore Polihua Beach, Lanai’s largest white sand beach, down the winding route. On the way home, stop at the Garden of the Gods to take pictures of the surreal setting sun. Spend your last meal of the day at the Lanai City Grill while taking in live music and sitting next to the outdoor fire pits.
Day 5: Shipwreck Beach (Kaiolohia)
One of Lanai’s most interesting sites is Shipwreck Beach, situated around 30 minutes (9 miles) northeast of Lanai City. You will arrive at the edge of Shipwreck Beach (aka Kaiolohia) after a beautiful and winding drive down the side of Lanai’s dormant volcano. Park the car and explore the eight miles of rugged shoreline and shipwrecks on foot.
Day 6: Kaunolu Village and Koloiki Ridge Trail
On Day 6 of your Lanai itinerary, take a Jeep ride to the historic Hawaiian town of Kaunolu. On this interpretative trail, you’ll enjoy the Kaneapua Rock, the Halulu heiau (temple), and other attractions. Explore the Koloiki Ridge Trail, a 4.2-mile out-and-back trail with a trailhead just outside Lanai City. Mountain biking, horseback riding, and hiking are all popular on this trail.
Day 7: Depart
On the final day of your Lanai itinerary, soak up the sun at Hulopoe Beach. Pick up a book and watch kids having fun in the waves. If you want to explore the rocky coastline, hike the Kapihaa Trail. When it’s time to say goodbye to Lanai, take a 10-minute walk from Hulopoe Beach to board the ferry at Manele Harbor. As you return to Lahaina Harbor in Maui, take in the views of the setting sun on the water.
