Thatch Caye, A Muy’Ono Resort: Amazing All-Inclusive Private Island in Belize
If you’re dreaming of relaxing in overwater bungalows for a romantic getaway (without the price tag of the Maldives or Bora Bora), look no further — Belize has a perfect option for you!
When you think of romantic overwater bungalows, you probably first picture the Maldives, Tahiti, and Bora Bora. These destinations are indeed absolutely stunning – but their price tags may stun you, as well!
For our honeymoon, we had the absolute pleasure of staying at Thatch Caye Resort in Belize. This resort, located on a secluded private island only a short boat ride from the coast of Dangriga, was everything we wanted in a honeymoon resort. Gorgeous and unique accommodations, beautiful crystal-clear water, pristine beaches, awesome food and drinks – and eco-friendly, to boot! Come here and enjoy the island life, at a picture-perfect destination in your own overwater villa.

Thatch Caye Resort – An Eco-Friendly All-Inclusive Resort in Belize
Thatch Caye, a Muy’Ono Resort, is an all-inclusive paradise located on a private island (Thatch Caye) in beautiful Belize. This island feels secluded and deserted, but in all of the right ways! Just 30 guests can stay at Thatch Caye at a time, making sure each and every guest receives the utmost attention and a truly unique travel experience.
The island is indeed peaceful, full of lush green foliage, pretty beaches, and beautiful clear turquoise water. However, our favorite part about this resort was that it has been recently renovated using natural reclaimed materials from the island! You can see these touches all throughout the resort, and it definitely helps you appreciate the beauty of Belize. The resort is also fully sustainable but is full of all of the amenities you could need, so you wouldn’t even know you’re staying at an eco-resort.
While Belize is home to the second-largest reef in the world after the Great Barrier Reef off Australia, the Belize Barrier Reef holds the crown of being the largest living reef in the world! This is a perfect destination to visit if you enjoy snorkeling, scuba diving or underwater photography, as the Belizean coast is basically one giant natural aquarium!
Another cool thing about the resort – WiFi is only available in the common areas, encouraging you to disconnect and fully immerse yourself and recharge in your surroundings.
And there’s so much to enjoy here! We loved sunbathing on our overwater hammock, playing in the natural saltwater pool, paddleboarding, happy hour on the beach, and chatting with the incredibly friendly resort staff!
The way the resort is set up, you make friends fast. Meals are served communally, which is an incredible experience. If the weather allows, dinner is served outdoors at the beautiful large outdoor picnic table adorned with beautiful hanging string lights. This makes for a great opportunity to chat with your new friends and share travel stories! We met some amazing people during our stay and made memories that will last forever.
Or, if you’d prefer a romantic dinner for two, you can request a private dinner setup and the staff is happy to accommodate! (More on that to come)

Where is Thatch Caye located?
Most people fly into Belize International Airport in Belize City. From here, you can then either transfer to an in-country flight to Dangriga (the closest town to Thatch Caye), or you can take the Muy’Ono Explorer ($150 US round-trip per person).
The Explorer is a 2-hour tour through Belize on your way to the resort. It provides you with a yummy welcome drink, a van with AC, and stops for refreshments and bathroom breaks! If you decide to take the in-country flight option, the flight is only 15 minutes and $195 US round-trip per person.
After that, once in Dangriga you hop on a short 20-minute speed boat ride which takes you to your private island paradise!
Thatch Caye can help you arrange your transportation, so contact them ahead of your stay (email: transfers@muy-ono.com).
We drove from our home in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico into Belize, and made our way to Dangriga to catch the boat to Thatch Caye after spending about a week exploring Placencia.

What is the food like at Thatch Caye?
While waiting for our boat to the island, we spoke with some ladies coming back from Thatch Caye. One of the first things they began praising during their stay at Thatch Caye was the food – and we quickly discovered why!
When you’re visiting Thatch Caye, you’re on a private island, so you will be dining exclusively with the resort. They are well aware of this, and make sure that your food and drinks experience is second to none! They hire the best local chefs, and offer a wide variety of Belizean and international dishes. They also cater to all dietary needs (just let them know ahead of time). I often prefer to eat vegetarian while traveling and there were plenty of options for me!
A typical daily dining experience at Thatch Caye Resort will consist of a freshly-cooked, made-to-order breakfast, a traditional Belizean lunch, and a yummy afternoon snack, followed by an authentic three-course dinner. Something unique about Thatch Caye Resort is that there aren’t menus at Thatch Caye, because all meals here are made with fresh, seasonal ingredients straight from Muy’Ono Farms. You’ll definitely find something you like at every meal, and the food was very high-quality!
One evening, we had a romantic, private dinner for two. The staff put together the sweetest dinner setup for us, and the food and service were both so good
What are the accommodation options at Thatch Caye?
Thatch Caye Resort takes pride in offering unique and beautiful accommodation options, from premier overwater bungalows to island cabanas! Every room was recently renovated from top to bottom, using reclaimed island materials. I loved searching for these elements all throughout the rooms – they were everywhere, and used so creatively! Such a unique experience for honeymoon accommodations.
Each accommodation type offers a peaceful oasis and rustic Belizean Feel. Each room offers a large deck / private patio with panoramic view for you to enjoy. They offer all of the necessities you’ll need, and none of those you won’t. That’s right – no distractions such as a phone, TV, or Wifi. (However, if you reeealllyyyy need to stay connected, we found that our DigiCell sim cards worked just fine in our room and around the island!) Also, as previously mentioned, Wifi and a phone are available at the Coco Lounge if you happen to need them.

Our Review of Thatch Caye Resort as a Honeymoon Option
This resort is such a breath of fresh air! Peaceful atmosphere. Spectacular ocean views. Relaxed and unrefined (but beautiful) surroundings and peaceful atmosphere. Friendly staff that makes you feel like family. Delicious food and drinks. Gorgeous, clear blue water. Fun water sports, in a safe protected beach area. And if you do decide to take an adventure off the resort, the staff can set you up, as they offer many awesome tour options. We, however, chose to spend all of our time enjoying the resort – it was so unique and serene!
I couldn’t recommend Thatch Caye Resort as a honeymoon option more, Having a private beach on your own private island to relax on was the best. Meeting friendly fellow travelers and honeymooners made for some great memories. And the entire sustainable, eco-friendly, reclaimed natural elements of the resort made you feel really good about staying here!
After your beach vacation at Thatch Caye, I highly recommend adding on 3 or 4 nights at Thatch Caye’s sister jungle resort, Sweet Songs Jungle Lodge. We loved this resort too and splitting your Belize trip into half-beach, half-jungle means you get to see as much of this beautiful country as possible!
We truly enjoyed our stay here and it was the perfect location for a honeymoon that was relaxed, easy-going, and secluded. Highly recommended!
